Created by Chicago artist John E. Bannon, Test of Time features three separate, overlapping steel arch structures skinned in bronze. Anchored to a poured foundation, it appears to float above the ground.
Created to be approachable and welcome visitors to lean, sit, and meet at the structure, Test of Time was designed to complement the landscape and surrounding architecture. The piece adds to a sense of place within The Crossroads, a capital improvement project featuring green infrastructure for effective stormwater management and native plants that support the local ecology.
Bannon’s artist statement notes that “the openness of the composition, absence of a base, and low profile were executed to project a sense of approachability, and invite and encourage interaction.” It also notes that the bronze finish will grow richer over time, “getting darker and eventually turning green.”
Located at the intersection of Rowan centers for education, performing arts, sciences, and athletics, this landscape project earned a design award from the American Society of Landscape Architects and was a finalist for the Green Infrastructure Award from the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia.
